I never knew much about circus life in the 1920's. Phenomenal style of story delivery; jumping between present and past. Good story too as it has a bit of everything, romance, drama, death, disappointment, happiness, etc.

Midnight’s Children - Salman Rushdie
I loved the way Rushdie wove the events of his story through the actual events that occurred in India after independence.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, is a novel that follows the story of two women living in Afghanistan throughout thirty years, going from the Soviet invasion, to the reign of the Taliban and the post-Taliban rebuilding. This novel is by the same author who wrote The Kite Runner and Hosseini blends the history of Afghanistan perfectly into the tumultuous story line.
